“There is far too much work done in the world, immense harm is caused by the belief that work is virtuous"
In reading these words by Bertrand Russel In Praise of Idleness, the puritanical voice inside many of us might flinch. Yes, we are in times of crisis, and this comes with undeniable urgency, which means we need to get to work! And we do, except that sometimes taking fewer, slower steps on the right path takes us further than scattering in a thousand directions.
Children learn that the first thing to do in a crisis is don’t panic. In these times, it is an art. Sometimes it is when we surrender to our current situation, when we relinquish the need to control, that a creative force greater than ourselves can rush through us. August is the perfect time to practice. We are coming together to break the spell of franticness with beauty and wind-swept beaches, deep dialogue, meditation and craft beer.
While relaxing, we can also ask some of the big questions like:
How do we really work together? What does collaboration mean?
How do we hold a sense of urgency without rushing to solutions?
What kind of network do we want to cultivate in listening and responding to these stormy times together?
There is no better place to practice than Bidston Observatory Artistic Research Centre which is made to allow artists and explorers to spend time together beautifully and affordably. Children and furry friends are also welcome.
